Sarah Mae Keeps Busy

Last year, after deciding I was going to pursue pattern designing in earnest, this was the first pattern that I made. As I said about my last granny square, I went very original in using a floral theme for my patterns (That’s sarcasm, everyone uses plant and flower names.) I chose dogwood because it is my mother’s favorite flowering tree – she prefers white dogwood, I prefer pink.

This is a very simple pattern worked in rounds, but it should be noted that the “beginning” of each round is in the middle of one side of the square, rather than on the corner. This is normal from what I have seen but threw a couple of my pattern testers for a loop.

Notes:

• This is a simple granny square to be used in any way you wish. Use whatever yarn and appropriate hook size that’s right for your project.
• Pattern is worked in rounds
• Rounds begin off-center of side you are working, rather than on a corner or center of a side.
• Instructions like *(ch 1, sk next dc, dc in following dc) repeat to second to last st, sk last dc, ch1, 2dc, ch3, 2dc in ch3 sp* means to repeat the part within the parentheses to stitch listed, then complete the following instructions until the next asterisk. * to * is the repeat to complete the whole round, and ( to ) is the repeat within the asterisks to complete that one side of the square.
• Ch3 counts as DC throughout

Abbreviations:

MC – Magic Circle

CH – Chain Stitch

DC – Double Crochet

SL ST – Slip Stitch

SK – Skip

Pattern:

R1: Make MC, ch3, 11dc in MC, join with sl st to 3^rd ch of ch3 (12dc)

R2: Ch6 (represents dc+ch3), *dc next st, ch 1, dc next st, ch1, dc next st, ch3* 3 times, dc next st, ch1, dc next st, ch1, join with sl st in 3^rd ch of ch6 (12 dc, 4 ch3sp, 8 ch1)

R3: ch3, dc in ch3 sp, ch 3, 2dc *dc every dc and ch1 sp to ch3 sp, 2dc, ch3, 2dc in ch3 sp* 3 times, dc in every dc and ch1 sp to last dc, dc in base of first ch3, sl st in 3rd ch of first ch3 (36dc, 4 ch3 sp)

R4: ch4 (represents dc+ch1), 2dc, ch3, 2dc in next ch3 sp, *(ch 1, sk next dc, dc in following dc) repeat to second to last st, sk last dc, ch1, 2dc, ch3, 2dc in ch3 sp* 3 times, (ch 1, sk next dc, dc in following dc) repeat to second to last dc, ch1, sl st in 3^rd ch of ch4 (32, 20 ch1 sp, 4 ch3 sp)

R5: ch3, dc in every ch1 sp and dc to last dc, *2dc, ch3, 2dc in ch3 sp, dc in every dc & ch1 sp to last dc* 3 times, 2dc, ch3, 2dc in ch3sp, dc in every dc & ch1 to last ch sp, sl st in 3^rd ch of ch3 (68 dc, 4 ch3 sp)

R6: ch3 *( ch 1, sk next dc, dc in following dc) repeat to last dc, 2dc, ch3, 2dc in ch3 sp* repeat 3 times, (ch 1, sk next dc, dc in following dc) repeat to last stitch before ch3, sl st 3rd ch of ch3 (48dc, 36 ch1 sp, 4 ch3 sp)
