Poppy Granny Square

I love this granny square. The simplicity of this square makes it perfect for an easy baby blanket or birthday gift. I named this square after my youngest daughter who we have nicknamed Poppy because she was so small when she was born, like a poppy seed. She was not premie, but she was barely 6lbs. And even today as a 16-month-old she is still in 9–12-month clothes. It looks like she is going to be fun sized when she grows up.

Notes:

Yarn: Herrschners 2-ply Afgan Yarn

Hooke size: E3/3.5mm

Gauge: Using a Fine #2 weight yarn and E4 hook ch13, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch to end (10 st incl beginning ch3), turn *ch3, dc in each following stitch to end, turn*, repeat * until you have 5 rows total. Gauge is 10 stitches by 5 rows in a 2in x 2in dc swatch

Abbreviations:

MC: magic circle

Bibble: bobble stitch( 4dc, drop loop, insert hook in top of 1st dc, pick up lopp, sl st 1st and 4th dc together, ch1 to join)

TRC: trebble crochet

SC: single crochet

CH: chain stitch

DC: double crochet

FO: finish off

Colors

Color 1: Eggplant

Color 2: Guava

Color 3: Pomegranate

  • If you crochet with tight tension this square will need to be blocked.
  • Some rows have special instructions in italics, be sure to follow these closely.

Pattern:

R1: [Color 1] MC, ch1, 12 sc in MC, sl st to first sc, ch 1, tighten MC

R2: 2 sc in same st, 2sc in each st, sl st to first sc, FO

R3: [Color 2](ch2 does not count as first stitch) Sl st to any sc, ch2, dc in same st, dc next 5 st, *ch3, dc next 6 st,* repeat * 3 times,  ch3, skip over ch2 and sl st to first dc, ch1

R4: skip 2 st, 8trc between 3rd and 4th st, skip 3 st,*sc in ch3sp, ch6, sc in ch3sp, skip next 3 st, 8trc between 3rd and 4th st, skip 3 st* repeat 3 times, sc in ch3sp, ch6, sc in ch3sp, FO

R5: [Color 3] sl st and ch2 between 4th and 5th trc *bobble between 4th and 5th trc, ch6, trc and ch1 4 times in ch6sp, trc in ch6sp, ch6* repeat * 3 times, bobble between 4th and 5th trc, ch6, trc and ch1 4 times in ch6sp, ch6, sl st to 1st bobble and FO

R6: [Color 2] sl st to top of any bobble (insert hook and pull up the loop in the center of the bobble so  the stitch is worked around the closing sl st), ch 6 trc in top of bobble, *4trc in ch6sp, dc in first trc, skip ch1sp, hdc in next trc, sc in ch1sp, sl st in next trc, sc in ch1sp, hdc in next trc, skip next ch1sp, dc in last trc, 4trc in ch6sp, trc ch3 trc in top of bobble * repeat * 3 times, 4trc in ch6sp, dc in first trc, skip ch1sp, hdc in next trc, sc in ch1sp, sl st in next trc, sc in ch1sp, hdc in next trc, skip next ch1sp, 4trc in ch6sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch6, sl st into ch3sp

R8: [Color 1] sl st to any ch2sp, ch3 3dc in ch2sp, remove hook from stitch and sl st 3rd ch of ch3 and 3rd dc together to make a bobble, ch3, hdc next 21 st *ch3, bobble in ch2sp, ch3, hdc next 21 st* repeat * 3 times, ch3, sl st to closing sl st on bobble, FO

R9: [Color 3} (Note: The first hdc after 3sc might be a bit hard to find and appear that it is part of the ch2sp. Keep this in mind when making that stitch.)  sl st to any ch3sp after bobble, ch1, 3sc in ch3sp *sc into the 3rd loop of next 21 hdc, 3sc in ch3sp, ch3, skip bobble, 3sc in ch3sp, sc * repeat * 3 times, sc into the 3rd loop of next 21 hdc, 3sc in the ch3sp, ch 3, sl st to first sc, sl st, FO*
